Mathematics education as a research area in mathematics
Mathematics education is, surprisingly, a research area in mathematics that is recognized by AMS - Mathematics Subject Classification System. It is assigned with 97-XX by MSC2020. Here are certain topics of mathematics education that are listed in MSC2020:
97A: History and society
97B: Educational policy and systems
97D: Education and instruction in mathematics
There are also some research areas which focus on (teaching) a particular subject in mathematics:
97E: Education of foundations of mathematics
97F: Education of arithmetic and number theory
97G: Geometry education
97H: Algebra education
97N: Education of numerical mathematics
In some, but not all, ICMs (International Congress of Mathematicians, which was introduced in a previous post), Mathematics education (and popularization of mathematics/history of math) was also a section. From ICM 1904 to ICM 1936, there wasn't any speaker in this area. However, in some years such as 1900, 2002, 2006, there were much more speakers/talks in Mathematics education than in other years. Most recently, the number of talks in mathematics education (and popularization of mathematics) at each ICM was only one or two. Some speakers in this section were pure mathematicians. For example, Gunter M. Ziegler (Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany), as introduced in the previous post about ICM, is a combinatorist who spoke at "Mathematics Education and Popularization of Mathematics" section at ICM 2014. Clara Grima (University of Seville, Spain), who was a speaker at "Mathematics Education and Popularization of Mathematics" section at ICM 2022, also did researches in computational geometry.
Perhaps most math faculties don't have any faculty member or research group in mathematics education (they should be parts of other more relevant faculties, for example). However, there are still some exceptions:
1. Professor Rainer Kaenders, University of Bonn (Germany).
2. Research group in Mathematics Education, TU Darmstadt (Germany), link, which is a part of TU Darmstadt's math faculty.
3. Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Texas Tech University (USA) has some faculty members who work on Education and Outreach, such as David Cannon, Brock Williams, …
4. Research group in Didactics of Mathematics at Mathematics Department, Universitat Siegen (Germany), link
5. Math & CS Faculty of VNU-HCM University of Science also has a specialzation named mathematics education (or giáo dục toán học in Vietnamese). However, students' main aim is to become a teacher rather than do research. A certain proportion of students in this specialization also write graduate thesis.
There are also some journals in mathematics education. For example, Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, as stated here, is a Q1 journal in both mathematics and education. According to the same source (i.e. Scimago), Research in Mathematics Education is also a Q2 or Q1 journal in both education and mathematics. However, in the past, it used to be recognized as Q4.
