Jürgen Neukirch was born on 24 July, 1937 in Dortmund, Germany. He obtained a PhD in mathematics at the University of Bonn in 1964 under the supervision of Wolfgang Krull and Ernst Ferdinand Peschl. After that, he worked at various institutions, such as Queen's University (Canada), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (the US) before becoming a professor at the University of Regensburg (Germany) in 1971. His main research area is algebraic number theory. He died on 5 February, 1997.

2. Mathematical contributions

According to Wikipedia, Jürgen Neukirch was known for his work on the embedding problem in algebraic number theory (which tries to realize a given group as the Galois group of a field extension) and some other problems in anabelian geometry, class field theory, etc. Moreover, he was the author of some well-known books, including Algebraic Number Theory, Class Field Theory. Some of the contents in Algebraic Number Theory are interesting and suitable for beginners for a certain extent, although the whole book seems to be very difficult (during my second year as an undergraduate student I used to attend a seminar featuring this book, but after a few talks the organizer decided to change into an "easier" book). Perhaps I will talk about them in another post.

Jürgen Neukirch also had many doctoral students who later became well-known and top-notch mathematicians. According to Mathematics Genealogy, he has 12 students and 203 descendants (until August 27, 2025). Some of his doctoral students are Uwe JannsenPeter Schneider
